Pipe bursting in Elyria

A liner needs a pipe that still has a shape. When the camera shows a collapse, Orangeburg gone oval, or a sag that will not drain, the lateral is replaced, and pipe bursting does it from two pits without a trench across the yard or the street.

How pipe bursting replaces a line

Pipe bursting is trenchless replacement. A steel cable or a string of rods is fed through the existing lateral between two pits dug at either end. A bursting head, a hardened cone wider than the existing pipe, is attached at the downstream pit along with the new polyethylene pipe, and a hydraulic unit at the upstream pit pulls the head through. As it moves, the head fractures the old clay, cast iron or Orangeburg and pushes the fragments outward into the surrounding soil, and the new pipe slides into the space behind it. When the head reaches the far pit, a brand-new jointless line occupies the exact path of the old one, from the house to the main, and the ground between the pits has never been opened.

When bursting is the right method

Lining and bursting are not competitors; the camera decides between them. A liner is the first choice for a pipe that is cracked, root-bound or corroded but still round and still sloped toward the main. Bursting is the answer when the camera finds a collapsed section the camera cannot pass, Orangeburg that has flattened into an oval, clay crushed by a tree root or a heavy vehicle, a sag long enough to hold standing water, or a lateral too small for the fixtures it serves. Northern Ohio has plenty of each. The postwar Orangeburg tracts and the oldest clay streets produce most of the bursting work, and the verified installer that bursts lines in Elyria proposes it only when the video shows that a liner would fail.

How the job runs

The pits are located from the inspection video and the surface locator, one near the foundation or an outside cleanout and one near the main or the edge of the right-of-way. Underground utilities are marked through Ohio's one-call service before anything is dug. The new polyethylene pipe is fused into one continuous length on site, the cable is threaded through the old line, and the pull takes place, usually in an hour or two for a residential run. The new pipe is connected at the house and at the main, the connections are inspected, a camera is run through the finished line, and the pits are backfilled and restored. Most single-family jobs are completed in one day; the restoration of two small patches of lawn is the only visible evidence.

What the new line gives you

Because fused polyethylene has no joints, the tree lawn maples and the backyard silver maple find nothing to grow into. It flexes with frost heave and the swelling and shrinking of glacial clay instead of cracking the way clay or cast iron does. It is immune to the corrosion that hollowed out the iron and the water absorption that ruined the Orangeburg. The owner receives a warranty in writing and a video of the finished pull, and the line can be enlarged during the same job if the house has added bathrooms or the building has grown. Where Elyria asks for a sewer report before a sale closes, a documented polyethylene replacement settles the matter.

Permits, the tree lawn and the street

Bursting is permitted through Elyria's plumbing or building office, with an additional right-of-way permit when the downstream pit lands in the tree lawn or the pavement. Before the proposal is final, the contractor establishes whether Elyria treats the full lateral as the owner's or maintains the public-property section itself, because that fixes where the work stops and who signs off at the main. Because the pit near the main is small and brief, the right-of-way disruption is a fraction of what an open trench across the street would require, and the paving patch is a few square feet rather than a lane. The regional sewer district is notified where the city requires it, which is more common in combined-sewer cities under overflow programs. the CIPP reference explains the method alongside lining so an owner can see how the recommendation was reached.

What to ask before signing

Ask to see the video that rules out lining. Ask for the pit locations marked on the lawn and the utility locates completed. Ask about the replacement pipe, the fusion joints and the terms of the warranty. Ask for the post-pull video and the permit sign-offs in writing. A contractor who can answer all of that from the inspection is doing the job properly. A list of installers verified against that standard is kept at the verified installer directory, and the one that serves Elyria and Lorain County can be reached at the number shown on this page.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting

When is bursting the better choice over lining?+

When the old pipe can no longer serve as a form. A collapsed section, a long sag holding water, Orangeburg or clay that has deformed, a line that is too small for the house, or a pipe so broken that a liner would have nothing to press against all call for bursting. The camera inspection makes the determination.

How large are the pits?+

Large enough to hold a worker and the pulling rig, which usually means a hole a few feet on a side at both ends of the lateral. One is at or near the foundation wall or an outside cleanout, the other near the main or the property line. Everything between them, lawn, front walk, driveway and tree lawn alike, stays undisturbed.

What pipe replaces the old one?+

High-density polyethylene, fused into one continuous length before it is pulled in. It has no joints for roots to enter, flexes with frost and clay-soil movement instead of cracking, and is rated for a service life measured in many decades. It is the standard material for trenchless replacement across northern Ohio.

Can the new line be larger than the old one?+

Yes. The bursting head is sized larger than the host pipe and the new pipe follows it, so a four-inch clay lateral can be replaced with a six-inch line if the house or building needs it. That is one advantage bursting has over lining, which keeps the existing diameter.

How do I get a quote?+

Phone or send the form. After the inspection you hold the recording and a written finding, and the proposal spells out why bursting was chosen over lining and where each pit will be dug. Estimates are free; call now.
